HARRYGRAYSCULPTOR
Designed by David Backhouse and unveiled by the Princess Royal in November 2004.
This impressive monument consists of a carved limestone wall providing the back drop for David Backhouse's bronze sculptures.
Richard Holliday and Harry Gray constructed the geometrically complicated, 4.50 metre high, curving Portland limestone wall before carving the entire frieze of animals in situ.
David Backhouse gave them freedom in their interpretation of the original maquette.
Harry Gray specialises in figurative sculpture, human and animal. He took great care to ensure that each element was anatomically accurate before drawing on the animals.
Harry Gray and Richard Holliday then skillfully carved all the detail and texture. Charles Jagger-Sargeant's breathtaking Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner gave inspiration for the relief carving for the animal frieze.
